Wet Dog Food Ratings
There
are a lot of misconceptions about feeding wet food or canned
food to dogs. The first is that wet food
will rot your dogs teeth and that dry food is necessary for
healthy teeth and gums. This is not true.
Whether you feed your dog wet food or dry food,
dental hygiene is important for your pet.
Brush your dog's teeth regularly and have the teeth checked
by the vet.
Another common belief is that all wet
food is dog "junk food." This is not the
case. In fact, wet food has many
advantages over dry kibble. Since canning
is a type of preservation, you will not find as many
preservatives in wet food as you do in dry.
Since wet food does not have to undergo as lengthy as
a preparation process as dry food, the chance of bacterial
contamination is lessened.
Wet food does not need to be sprayed
with fat and digest, so it can be hard to find a canned food
that matches your dog's taste buds. Try
to find something your dog likes, but don't let your dog
completely dictate the food you feed them.
Like many people, dogs will often choose junk food
instead of what is healthiest for them.
If you are switching over to a new food, you might find it
easier to switch gradually so that you do not upset your
dog's taste buds or digestive system.
Although you do have to watch for
by-products in wet foods, canned foods have the advantage
over dry food in that they are fresh instead of rendered and
processed. The meat in canned food is
often of a higher quality and wet food contains more
protein.
While canned food might have a lot of
advantages over dry kibble, there is both high quality and
low quality wet dog food. Choose food
that is nutritious and check the ingredients label.
Some high quality brands include Innova, Eagle Pack
Holistic Select, Natural Balance, EVO, Active Life, Castor
and Pollus Organix, Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover's Soul,
Merrick, Doctors Foster and Smith, California Natural, Old
Mother Hubbard, Newman's Own Organics, Wellness, Pet
Promise, and Solid Gold
If you decide to feed both canned and
dry food to your dog, be sure to not mix them.
Dry food should not be moistened.
